WARRINGTON Rylands rounded of a “phenomenal season” with their highest league finish in 118 years as they now head into the play-offs with an away trip to Marine on Tuesday evening.

“It’s been a phenomenal season; we’ve just got stronger and stronger despite adversity along the way” – said caretaker boss Dean Furman.

Warrington Rylands were already in the NPL Premier League play offs as they hosted Ilkeston for the Season Finale at The Hive Arena, Gorsey Lane.

The travelling supporters came prepared for an enjoyable day, most of them wore fancy dress, and were in fine voice throughout the match.

‘In charge’ Dean Furman fielded a different side, resting key players and giving extra minutes to others.

Rylands appeared in total control of the first 45 minutes but could not find a way to beat the on-form Matt Yates in The Robin’s goal. And then, during a goalmouth clearance, the linesman indicated a push in the goalmouth and the referee was obliged to award a penalty to the Derbyshire team.

Luke Pilling has a reputation for saving penalties but not this time; however, the post became his assistant and the ball rebounded back into play.

On 45 minutes Dan Cockerline ran through onto goal but once again Yates was up to the task, taking the ball off his feet as the whistle blew for half-time.

Furman brought on fresh legs in the second half making an immediate impact on the game: Djavan Pedro confused the opposition with his powerful runs; Momodou Touray, with possibly his first touch, put the ball past Yates for the first goal.

Fifteen minutes later Pedro was brought down in the box and Ben Hardcastle stepped up to put the game to rest from the penalty spot to make it 2-0 for Rylands.

Warrington Rylands were relying upon Ashton United to beat Marine to ensure a Home fixture in the first play-off but it wasn’t to be. Following their highest finish in 118 years, they now travel to The Marine Travel Arena on Tuesday for a 7.45pm kick off.
