Warrington Rylands FC 1-0 Matlock Town FC

Ben Hough’s late winner sees the blues back to winning ways and keeps up our play-off push. It was the midfielder’s second goal of the season and his second against Matlock having scored in the reverse fixture back in September

Despite having control throughout the majority of the game Rylands found it tough to break down a strong Matlock defence. After 23 minutes, Djavan Pedro set up Joe Adams for a shot that went inches over the crossbar.

Luke Pilling was never under threat whereas Saul Deeney at the other end had to work hard to keep the ball out of his net under a barrage of chances from The Blues. Matlock had a fair amount of possession in Warrington’s half, but were susceptible against the break with Pedro looking dangerous.

Rylands upped the pace in the second half, a couple of Hough shots cannoning off bodies thrown into their path, but the Gladiators’ defending was resolute. Matlock made their first effort on target in the 68th minute, but Pilling was barely troubled as he caught a floating Evan’s header from a John Johnston cross.

It looked as though Clegg’s side were headed for another frustrating draw until Hough broke the deadlock four minutes from time when Swaby-Neavin’s shot landed at the feet of Hough who wasted no time, beating Deeney and sealing victory for the home side.

Rylands were the only side in the top seven to record a victory on Saturday, moving us back up to second place on 53 points, 11 behind leaders Radcliffe and six points inside the top five.

We travel to FC United of Manchester next Saturday for a 3pm kick off in The Pitching In Northern Premier League.
